Creating Things That Matter The Art and Science of Innovations That Last David Edwards 9781250230713 Books Reviews

  • David Edwards is a creative visionary whose principal creation was a inhalable insulin molecule that could replace injections for diabetics. In "Creating Things That Matter" Edwards recounts several stories of the creative journey from luminaries such as Neri Oxman (architecture), Ferran Adria (haute cuisine), and Robert Langer (medicine), among others. Edwards's course at Harvard, from which this book takes its name, is focused on interdisciplinary design to create new technologies, products and businesses that have the potential to change the world. The very best sections in the book, the chapters on Robert Langer and Edwards own experience, demonstrate the interdisciplinary methodology and its potential. Some of the other examples, Neri Oxman or Ferran Adria, while interesting, illustrate more of a classical idea of a solitary creative genius that do not bolster Edwards's thesis or frameworks for "Creating Things that Matter".

Edwards is a talented writer and this is a very enjoyable read. I would recommend "Creating Things that Matter" for any creative professional, artist, thinker or entrepreneur.
